Educational Horizons Students Place 1st at District Science Fair
Two Educational Horizons students took home first place trophies at the Brevard Southern Division Elementary Art & Science Fair that was held March 11th at the Melbourne Auditorium.
3rd Grade: Lucas B. 1st Place – Environmental
4th Grade: Ethan B. 1st Place – Environmental
Definition of the Environmental Category:
Projects that deal with human relationships with their natural surroundings. Projects may include the relationships of energy, population, pollution, resource allocation and depletion, conservation, transportation, and technology to the total human environment. Topics may include but not be limited to: ways that humans protect or improve the quality of life by wisely using, reusing, recycling, or reducing use of our natural resources; ways that technology impacts our resources; ways that humans negatively impact the quality of life by pollution, etc.

Educational Horizons Students Study the Indian River Lagoon
Educational Horizons students in grades 4, 5, and 6 took a recent trip to Long Point State Park to join the Brevard Zoo for a study of the Indian River Lagoon called Lagoon Quest. This culminating activity completed their studies at school and work towards conserving and preserving our fragile ecosystem.
About Lagoon Quest
Lagoon Quest is designed to integrate real-life experience with 4th grade curriculum covering Sunshine State Standards in science, social studies, math, and language arts using the rich environmental resources of the Indian River Lagoon. The program enables students to gain an appreciation and awareness of the fragile estuarine environment passing through our community and prepares students to make informed decisions that influence the quality of life in our area.
Lagoon Quest creates a sense of pride and feeling of ownership and responsibility in children so natural treasures such as the Indian River Lagoon will remain healthy and vibrant for generations to come.
Brevard Zoo is grateful to be a part of this unique program and would like to acknowledge and thank the Brevard Public School System for their partnership in the Lagoon Quest program.

Alumni Spotlight: River Grace
Former Educational Horizons student, River Grace has been VERY busy lately. He recently hiked the Andes and trekked through the jungles of the western Amazon in the summer of 2013, and then he went to Ecuador and the Galapagos in summer of 2014, hiking to the peaks of active volcanoes, and diving with sea lions and giant stingrays.
He’s also remained very active in academics – math, Latin and science in particular. Below is a photo of River displaying the “bling” from his latest round at the state Science Fair.
River attended the regional high school science fair (as a 10th-grader), and won 1st place in the Animal Sciences division, and then went on to amaze us by winning Best in Show in the biological division!
A couple of weeks ago he went to the state Science Fair where he knew the competition would be very strong – lots of excellent junior and senior projects. Still, he won 1st-place in the Zoology division, and then won the Grand Award, Best-in-Fair, and was named a Ying Science Scholar!
“We were stunned! But we heard from judges who said that there really was no competition, that he is a truly excellent scientist and communicator. We heard that in deliberations at the regional science fair, the judges nicknamed him “the outlier””, said his father.

Educational Horizons Strengthens Literacy Skills
Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida is an annual event during which students, teachers, administrators, parents and volunteers all celebrate the tremendous success Florida’s students have accomplished over the past decade. We also take the opportunity during the week to encourage our students to keep reading and improving their skills.
We know that if Florida’s students are going to shoot for the moon and achieve great success they must have the literacy skills that 21st century careers demand. Florida’s educators and students will continue to make strides toward increasing student achievement in literacy, and through experiences like the portable planetarium tour, students will be challenged to read every day because “Reading Accelerates Success”.

As part of Literacy Week at Educational Horizons Charter School, students paired up in the grades to be reading buddies. The younger student brought a favorite book from home or school and asked an older student to read to them. They had a great time sharing the stories.

Last Tuesday night was a fantastic part of our Literacy Week. Our teachers dressed up as characters and read to families. Classes entertained us with performances. We ate pizza and decorated cupcakes. Our school earned a gift card to be used for supplies and books. Many families donated books to their child’s class. We had a wonderful time visiting and celebrating reading.

Educational Horizons Charter School to Celebrate National School Choice Week
During the week of January 28-30, 2015, Educational Horizons will participate in National School Choice Week 2015 with an Open House each day.
The Open House, which will take place from 9:00-11:00 each day at the school. This is a great opportunity for interested parents to visit the school, meet our teachers, as well as observe students in the classroom working with Montessori materials. You will also have a chance to meet other interested parents, and complete the application form for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year. We hope you will join us!
National School Choice Week is a non-partisan, non-political effort that raises awareness about the importance of effective education options for students. More than 9,000 events are being planned across the country to celebrate National School Choice Week.
