Educational Horizons Students Participate in United Way Summer Reading Challenge

Congratulations to our students who participated in the United Way Summer Reading Challenge. In September they were treated to an ice cream surprise and a goodie bag with treats as they met and discussed the books they read over the summer. Great Job!

Educational Horizons Students Participate in United Way Summer Reading Challenge

Research shows that students lose much of the school year’s progress if they do not read over the summer months.

Brevard Public Schools challenged our students to read as many books as they could read over the summer months. As parents you can always help your children avoid the typical “summer slide” of learning loss by providing access to reading materials and encouraging them to read frequently, both on their own and with a family member.

    Suggested Summer Reading Lists

The lists linked below include a wide variety of books that will appeal to the interests and maturity levels of many students. Parents are encouraged to review book selections with their children in order to help them make appropriate choices.

Field Trip to Brevard History Museum

Mrs. Tapp and her students had an enjoyable time on a recent field trip to Brevard History Museum. They studied the history of Florida and the species of animals and plants that inhabit this great state.

The Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science is located in Cocoa, Florida. Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood the museum boasts two wings of indoor exhibits and a 22-acre nature preserve backing up to the Eastern Florida State College Planetarium. Through curation and display they invite visitors to explore the unique history of Brevard County. From Ice Age fossils to the Space Age Hubble telescope, they have something for everyone!

The Brevard Museum is also home to the Florida Historical Society Archaeological Institute whose mission, in hand with the museum, is to educate the public about Florida archaeology through research, publication and outreach.

    About Lagoon Quest

irl1Lagoon Quest is designed to integrate real-life experience with 4th grade curriculum covering Sunshine State Standards in science, social studies, math, and language arts using the rich environmental resources of the Indian River Lagoon. The program enables students to gain an appreciation and awareness of the fragile estuarine environment passing through our community and prepares students to make informed decisions that influence the quality of life in our area.

Lagoon Quest creates a sense of pride and feeling of ownership and responsibility in children so natural treasures such as the Indian River Lagoon will remain healthy and vibrant for generations to come.

Brevard Zoo is grateful to be a part of this unique program and would like to acknowledge and thank the Brevard Public School System for their partnership in the Lagoon Quest program.
